Lake Merritt is the undisputed centerpiece of the neighborhood and one of Oakland's greatest assets. A scenic 3.4-mile walking path encircles the lake, accompanied by picnic areas, public gardens, and open green spaces that residents use for exercise, relaxation, and social gatherings. It's a true urban oasis — and it's right outside your door.

The Grand Avenue and Lakeshore corridor is home to some of Oakland's most celebrated dining. Grand Lake Kitchen is a neighborhood institution for brunch and dinner. alaMar Dominican Kitchen delivers bold, soulful flavors right on Grand Avenue. Lake Chalet Seafood Bar & Grill offers stunning lakeside dining. Haddon Hill Café and a constellation of coffee spots along Grand and Lakeshore round out an exceptional everyday dining scene.

The Grand is superbly connected to the Bay Area's transit network. AC Transit bus lines run along Grand Avenue, and BART's 19th Street/Oakland Station — providing direct service to San Francisco in 15–20 minutes — is readily accessible. Downtown Oakland is just minutes away by car or transit.

Oakland's cultural scene is rich and diverse, and The Grand places residents at its heart. The Oakland Museum of California is a celebrated destination for art, history, and natural science. Children's Fairyland offers a magical experience for families. The grand, historic Grand Lake Theater is a neighborhood landmark. The Paramount Theatre and a thriving ecosystem of galleries and music venues in Downtown Oakland round out an entertainment offering of rare depth.

Residents enjoy excellent grocery access with Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and local farmers' markets all within a short walk or drive. Many residents walk for quick trips and drive for larger hauls.

Lake Merritt and the surrounding neighborhood maintain a vibrant, year-round events calendar. Farmers markets, outdoor festivals, art walks, and seasonal community celebrations draw residents together regularly. The NorthLake lot hosts weekly programming — including outdoor yoga, movie viewings, and crafting events.

The Grand/Lakeshore area is defined by its independent, locally owned character. Residents explore a mix of boutiques, specialty shops, and small businesses that give the neighborhood its distinct personality. Standouts include Wildone Gift Shop, Nomadic Bookstore, and Chubby — a beloved neighborhood convenience store.
